Hodi Hodi - OverviewHodi Hodi in Swahili means Hello Hello, which is not a reference to the 1980's BBC broadcast TV sitcom set in wartime France, but rather a question the owners expect from those who see the villas, to which the answer is invariably Karibuni (you're welcome).
As you would expect, Hodi Hodi has a wonderfully laid back atmosphere with happy and attentive staff. There is a very natural feel about the place and the beachfront rooms have been specially designed to benefit from the constant sea breeze. Each room comes with an outdoor dining area plus fans and mosquito nets over the beds. There is Wifi available throughout plus a tour desk and laundry facilities. The food incorporates flavours from Spain, India and the Middle East, but it is all sourced from the island and set in a pallet of Zanzibari spices.
Dua HouseDua House is built in a colonial Arabic style with spacious cool interiors. Dua is Swahili for ‘prayer’ or ‘blessing’. The villa has two sun terraces for power-tanning and a well-equipped kitchen which makes it ideal for self-catering. Dua House can be booked per room or as the whole house for a private party of up to six people.
Poa HousePoa House is designed in a more modern style. The house can be rented as a whole for a party of up to eight, or as three separate rooms for individual bookings – with double or twin beds. Upstairs, there is a family suite which sleeps four and has a private rooftop sun terrace as well as its own sunset lounge-bar.
Toto HouseToto is smaller than the other houses and comprises a family suite, with a double and 3 single beds in an adjacent room. This villa is perfect for a group of guests that need their own space.
Hodi Hodi - Community and Conservation
The Hodi Hodi philosophy is about responsible tourism and providing an authentic and sustainable experience.
The resort buys locally and recycles wherever possible. Waste is collected from the site by donkey cart and water is used with care, as is electricity. All the staff and suppliers are from the nearby village of Kilima Juu and the small primary school receives learning gifts from guests. Guests are politely requested to dress demurely in the village and towns in respect of local traditions.
Hodi Hodi - Our Opinion
Unlike many operators we not only visit all the hotels we offer regularly but we also stay in them. Please find a few hints, tips and opinions from our team below:
Hodi Hodi looks like a great addition to the Island's portfolio. There is a growing trend for families and groups looking for private villas set in small resorts, and we feel that Hodi Hodi looks like a good value option in a very nice part of Matemwe. The ethos of the lodge is just right - relaxed, friendly and responsible. We look forward to seeing how it develops.
