The Manta Resort - The Details

With the sound of gently lapping waves and the stunning sunset over the Pemba Channel, we believe this one of the most relaxing retreats in the world.

Pemba life revolves around the ebb and flow of the ocean tides. Each day you will observe the ever-changing spectrum of colours that flow with the sea.

Due to Manta Resort’s remote location, everything is included in your stay, even your laundry! Prices also include a free daily treatment (per person) at the Kipepeo Spa - so you can be as relaxed as possible.

Room Descriptions & Facilities

Exposed wooden beams inside and traditional thatched Makuti roofs above form the structure of the buildings, whitewashed and generously spaced throughout the gardens and beach front. The bright patchwork colour block bedspreads and scatter cushions add a fun and engaging blast of colour. All rooms and suites feature king size beds, ceiling fans, en-suite bathrooms and ocean views. Large wooden doors open the rooms to the outside terrace and ocean beyond.

The Underwater Room

"MAGIC beyond MAGIC"
Imagine yourself encapsulated within a turquoise blue bubble, watching shoals of reef fish swimming lazily by - sometimes in three or four layers of different species above the reef floor.

Underwater Room Underwater Room

This is the heart-stopping experience that awaits you in the underwater room.
The floating structure, Swedish engineered, provides three levels, those above the water clad in local hardwood, and each an experience in itself.

The landing deck, at sea level, has a lounge area and bathroom facility. A ladder leads up to the roof which has a lounging area - for sun worshipping by day and by night you can lie back in the starlight and wonder at the extraordinary clarity of the stars, planets and above all, the edge of our own galaxy - the wonderful Milky Way - all seen without any light pollution. Sleep under the stars to the soft murmuring of the sea.

Then downstairs - the magical feeling of lying on a soft double bed surrounded by panes of glass affording almost 360 degrees viewing - watching the shoals of reef fish and exquisite, often rarely seen individuals visiting your windows. Some have taken up residence around the room, which affords them some protection from predation. For instance, three bat fish and a trumpet fish called Nick who is always swimming around and seemingly looking in !

By night, the underwater spotlights beneath each window around the room attract the shyer and more unusual, for instance squid. Coral is already establishing itself on the anchoring lines and around the underwater structure. Octopus and even spanish dancers have been seen attaching themselves to the glass panes. The reef inhabitants can simply not resist attraction, which makes for exciting watching and a truly unique experience!

The Garden Rooms

Open plan, makuti thatched and located in the beautiful gardens. Garden rooms have a king size bed protected by a mosquito net, an en-suite, open plan bathroom and a relaxing veranda. Great value!

Superior Garden Rooms

The Superior Garden Rooms have views of the nearby ocean between the foliage. One of the two pairs of Superior Garden Rooms has an interconnecting door, making it an superb choice for families or larger groups. Enjoy air-conditioning, a king size four poster bed and a private makuti thatch covered terrace.

Seafront Villas

Spacious, private, air-conditioned villas with a centred king size bed and large en-suite bathroom. Your secluded sun terrace faces the incredible ocean sunset.

The Beach Lounge

Watch the tide ebb and flow whilst sipping a “Lemongrass Ginger Sling”, with your feet buried in the soft, warm sand and a gentle breeze cooling you. The cocktail menu is unsurpassed, including freshly handpicked island mango, lime, lemon, pineapple, and coconuts. Spoil yourself with the exotic fruits blended into smooth and refreshing drinks. Sundowners, fruit drinks and cocktails are the bartenders speciality! Manta Resort is crafted around a big open planned chill-out area. They have free WIFI in the main lounge and dining area.

Restaurant and Bar

Pemba is the original spice island and today is the world’s most major cloves producer. The mouth-watering variety of fresh local seafood, variety of beef, chicken and vegetable dishes, will often have a delicious and distinctive Pemba flavour. Instead of buffet meals, Manta will personally serve your meals to you on the main veranda overlooking the ocean. If you wish for a change of scenery you may move to the pool deck or beach. The well-stocked bar serves drinks all day on throughout the resort and the beach. Amongst snacks available, we highly recommend that you sample the delicious fruit platter when peckish.

The diving around Pemba Island is nothing short of breath-taking. Untouched coral reefs surround the island making it one of the world’s best dive sites. Pemba is the ideal place to begin your diving adventure. It has one of the healthiest reefs in the Indian Ocean, the water temperature averages 26ºC and the visibility is 30-40 meters - almost daily!

Learn to dive

Dive 360 Pemba Dive Centre has all you need: a fantastic training pool in two levels and professional instructors and guides and multilingual staff to help you feel free as a fish!

The snorkelling around Pemba is spectacular. In particular, we recommend the entrance of the small islands of western Pemba – such as Njao and Fundo. The coral is outstanding with the coral fish life a-plenty. You can also snorkel right by the resort in the “Lagoon” at low tide. Visit the sites at low tide to get really up-close to the coral

Excursions and tours

Pemba Island is remote and fascinating. Manta Resort can arrange various tours and excursions for you to explore: these range from walks to local villages, to guided tours of the ancient Ngezi Forest, to spotting the endemic Pemba Flying Fox.

Kipepeo Spa

Breathe in and breathe out... a new pace awaits. Clear your mind of your everyday worries, enjoy the quiet of this remote island and let one of the trained therapists welcome you to the spa for a daily treatment of your choice. (One free spa treatment per day is included.)

Star gazing

On a moon-free night the sky sparkles with an unimaginable expanse of stars. Manta Resort can specially arrange some star gazing on the beach for you: an unforgettable experience.

Community & Conservation

Manta Resort supports the conservation of Pemba wildlife. The lodge endeavours to have as little impact on the community and environment as possible. Manta is involved in programs to preserve wildlife and make life easier for the Pembian community, supporting: educational programs, healthcare provision, fresh water pumps and employment opportunities.

Pemba Alive community program
The Manta Resort fully supports Pemba Alive in their cause. Pemba Alive aims to supply the local community with the tools that they need to determine and develop their own future – on their own terms. Pemba Alive is striving to educate and help local people to preserve the island for generations to come.

Manta Resort - Opinions and Reviews

Unlike many operators we not only visit all the hotels we offer regularly but we also stay in them. Please find a few hints, tips and opinions from our staff plus some genuine feedback from our clients below.

Manta Resort is a hidden gem: Truly authentic, luxurious and set on an absolutely stunning stretch of beach. Unlike most beaches on the archipelago the beach is free of sea urchins and guests can enjoy swimming in the sea during all tides. The service is warm, friendly and efficient yet relaxed. Everything is included leaving you to just enjoy the experience. Manta is perfect for divers and nature lovers alike. The location is isolated so not for those who enjoy a lot of nightlife. For me, I think Manta Resort is one of the most charming hotels I have ever been fortunate enough to see.
