Fundu Lagoon - The Details
Whether you are arriving straight from an international flight, a safari or even a few days in Zanzibar, the very passage from Chake Chake Airport to the port at Mkoani and on to Fundu by boat feels like your outer shell, piece by piece, is softly blown away by the wind to leave you reborn to the wilds where you’ll relax in harmony with nature. The vivid colours are in such contrast to our day-to-day lives that you can’t help but feel all your senses are heightened. Fundu Lagoon is the perfect antidote to the technological modern world.

Superior Suites are beach front only and have much a larger plunge pool on extensive decking with an outdoor lounge and ‘chill out’ on a mezzanine level. These are huge suites and almost like having your own private Robinson Crusoe Villa!Resort Service & Facilities
The Jetty Bar is your first taste of the Fundu experience when landing by speedboat and greeted by your hosts. Located a third of the way along the jetty, its ambient atmosphere makes it the best spot for sun downers or to while away the day gazing out to sea.
Fundu’s freeform infinity pool is built up a hillside flanked on three sides by natural forest with stunning views across the bays. A bar serving drinks and snacks throughout the day makes this a perfect spot for lazing after a morning’s diving or spa treatments.
The main restaurant is located between the jetty and pool, built on stilts beneath a thatch canopy. In this same area are spaces for lounging and taking in the lovely pieces of art and sculpture displayed throughout the resort. There is an additional pre and post dinner bar and menus are chalked up daily, ever changing and influenced by the local catch of the day.
The Fusion Spa is located up on the hillside with the pool and offers a blend of African and Asian treatments. Thai and Balinese massages, body scrubs made from local spices and infused oils, after sun treatments and hot stone therapies can be enjoyed alongside traditional beauty treatments.
Diving the waters surrounding Pemba Island is like being the only guest of the Louvre. There are miles upon miles of pristine coral in aquamarine waters teaming with colour and a feast for all divers from the beginner to the advanced. Fundu Lagoon’s dive centre is fully equipped and waiting to open your eyes to the Aladdin’s cave of riches below the water. The snorkelling opportunities are just as impressive with shallow reefs waiting to be discovered.
Fishing under the IGFA guidelines offers keen anglers the chance to catch some of Pemba’s six species of bill fish with wahoo, yellow fin tuna and giant trevally featuring in catches too. Various fishing styles are available including trolling, popping, jigging and live baiting. There are deep drop offs around the small barrier islands, perfect for the novice and experienced angler alike.
Mangrove canoe trips, sunset dhow cruises and visits to local islands and historical sites are all available for you, so at Fundu Lagoon you can be as adventurous overland as you can underwater. This, we are sure, is why so many guests return time and time again.
Community & Conservation
From the very beginning, Fundu’s philosophy has been to support the community of the six Wambaa villages surrounding the hotel. The local people are all free to use the boats that transfer guests and supplies form Mkoani port to the jetty at Fundu, a transportation system that has enhanced the villagers lives not just on a daily basis, but in giving them access to the mainland in medical emergencies. The hotel welfare fund redistributes donations from guests by working with the village committee and Sheha (chief) to see where the money is best spent to benefit the whole community. Past projects have brought the villages a fresh water supply, built a primary school and specialist care for children with congenital malformations. Farming has also been encouraged and developed with the intention of selling to the kitchens at Fundu.
