The Palms
Voted among the top 15... "World's Most Romantic All Inclusive Resorts"

If you had no choice but to live in a hotel in Zanzibar this unquestionably would be the one. The colonial style villas ooze timeless style and sophistication. The Plantation House bar and restaurant is elegant yet informal and feels very much like an extension of your own private villa.

The Palms - The Details

The Palms sits between its sister properties Breezes and Baraza; as a guest of the Palms each of the neighbouring resort facilities are open to you. The Palms is the most exclusive lodge on the island with just six private villas accommodating a maximum of 18 guests, though there are usually just 12 guests as this is very much a couples’ retreat. Children are not permitted, although a third adult (over 16) can be accommodated in the study of the villas.

The service and attention to detail is unsurpassed: from late afternoon cocktails delivered to your villa accompanied by a pretty cake stand laden with salty snacks, to fresh fruit juices handed to you as you laze on your daybed on the private beach. It’s as if your every desire is pre-empted and sometimes you didn’t even realise you’d desired the very thing that pleases you most in the day!

Room Descriptions & Facilities

Each of the six villas at The Palms has over 140 square metres of living space with a large open plan bedroom and living room, full en-suite bathroom, dressing room, study/spare room with en-suite and a large furnished terrace with ocean views. Each veranda also has a silk draped Zanzibari day bed which accents a midnight blue plunge pool.

Villa facilities include: satellite TV and DVD player with a library of films available at reception, mini bar, safe deposit box, tea and coffee making facilities, telephone and air conditioning.

Resort Service & Facilities

  • The Sanctuary Spa

  • The Plantation House

  • The Water Club

The Sanctuary Spa

In a beautiful ocean front setting, international therapists offer a wide variety of facial, body, hand and foot treatments - as well as specialised massage techniques. Therapists from Thailand and Bali offer invigorating Thai massage and the world renowned Balinese Massage.

The Sanctuary Spa also offers “The Kili Foot Treatment” and "Après Safari Treatment ©", which are specially designed to soothe and rejuvenate after the dust and bumpy roads of the African bush. An excellent option for those who are looking to recover after an adventure filled safari.

The Plantation House

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served on the terrace or in the restaurant of The Plantation House. A large selection of house wine, spirits and beers are available alongside soft drinks, juices, tea and coffee. A lounge upstairs houses a small library where guests are free to share novels.

The Water Club

Just 300 metres from the private Palms beach is The Water Club (on Breezes beach front). This is Zanzibar’s best equipped water sports and beach activity centre offering the following:

Low tide: power kiting, land boarding, kite buggy, bikes, football, volleyball, Frisbee, beach tennis, reef walks and snorkelling.
High tide: kite surfing, sailing, windsurfing, pedal boats and snorkelling.

There is also a dive centre on site.

Community & Conservation

The Palms has gone to great lengths to build their hotel in an environmentally responsible way. All villas have solar power and there is a state-of-the-art waste disposal and recycling system.

They have an environmentally responsible desalination plant where all their water is produced locally - not taken from the village source. They prioritise purchasing any materials or supplies from the local village wherever possible and regularly get visits from local fishermen who sell them the catch of the day in an effort to support the local community.

When The Palms opened, a decision was made to support the local school. As a result virtually 90% of all staff are graduates. They have undergone intensive training programs, English classes (from a professional instructor of English) and have acquired a lifetime skill which will benefit them and the hospitality industry of Zanzibar for an entire generation.

Their charity ‘Palms for Bwejuu’ (linked with sister hotels Breezes and Baraza) has been responsible for a huge improvement in the quality of life of the village. Since its inception, this charity has built a mosque, repainted the Bwejuu clinic and supplied them with fresh water and medicines (during the most recent power blackout). They have donated beds and mattresses, clothes, school supplies and books.

Once a year, together with another charity, the Palms management and staff go to the village and clean the beaches and villages, paint the clinic and celebrate another year of working with the local community. The most recent event, which took place in collaboration with the sister property (Breezes for Bwejuu), was a Michamvi vs. Bwejuu football match; they donated 40 footballs to the pitch along with a trophy for the winner. The winning team received 800,000 Tanzanian Shillings and the other team received 450,000. These funds will be used by the teams to buy uniforms, train, and assist in providing the youth of the two villages with constructive activities.

Palms guests consistently send gifts, donations and helpful material to the charity, which is a wonderful indicator of the success of the program and the importance of bringing them to visit and experience village life.

The Palms - Opinions and Reviews

This is a dream destination for honeymooners and couples seeking a relaxing and romantic stay in paradise. The Palms provides an elegant and thoroughly luxurious stay for the discerning traveller. Attention to detail is unsurpassed. The Palms is a class act. I would say this small boutique hotel is best suited to couples. For families I would advise best to try their sister hotel, Baraza, just next door.
