Baraza Zanzibar
Ultimate luxury on one of the world's best beaches!

Baraza is up there in the top end of luxury on Zanzibar and indeed the world over. The unique architectural style is born of the vision of a bygone era of Omani Sultans and Sultanas lazing in a heady flow of luxury silks. Ornately adorned passages giving way to archways opening into cavernous halls with sumptuous day beds where the eye is drawn on to the distant ocean framed by the intricate archways. It really is that breath taking, atmospheric and capable of transporting you through time.

We challenge anybody to name a place where there are more brass lanterns (aside from Aladdin’s cave) and to fault the décor which is entirely and specifically hand crafted for Baraza. The Raguz family (owners of Baraza and neighbouring Breezes and The Palms) are the design team behind Palacina Interiors in Nairobi and their creativity in every facet of hospitality is showcased here in their third Bwejuu property which completes their Zanzibar portfolio.

Baraza Resort and Spa - The Details

The generously spaced loungers on the beach offer guest’s private space outside of their ample villas and no sooner as you’ve settled yourself, a smiling chap will arrive with mouth-watering fruits and crushed ice cocktails. All the staff are dressed in Omani style traditional white robes and glide through the resort as if part of the design. Service is amongst the best on the Island.

The Faranghi spa is without doubt the finest in Zanzibar and we’d go as far as to say East Africa. Thai, Balanise and Indian therapists stimulate your senses and then set you to rest in the lavish relaxation room adorned in rich golden fabrics and decorative brass ornaments. The lap pool, around which the treatment and relaxation rooms are set, plays underwater music. This oasis of calm is a simply a sumptuous sensory feast.

Community & Conservation

A decision was made when Baraza opened to support the local hotel school and as a result virtually 90% of all staff are graduates. They have undergone intensive training programs, English classes (from a professional instructor of English) and have acquired a lifetime skill which will benefit them and the hospitality industry of Zanzibar in general for an entire generation.

Their charity Baraza for Bwejuu (linked with sister hotels Breezes and Palms) has been responsible for a huge improvement in the quality of life of the village. Since its inception, this charity has built a mosque, repainted the Bwejuu clinic and supplied them with fresh water and medicines (during the most recent power blackout). They have donated beds and mattresses, clothes, school supplies, and books.

Once a year, together with another charity, the Baraza management and staff go to the village and clean the beaches and villages, paint the clinic and celebrate another year of working together with the local community. The most recent event which was done together with sister property (Breezes for Bwejuu) was a Michamvi vs. Bwejuu football match; we donated 40 footballs to the pitch along with a trophy for the winner. The winning team received Tanzanian Shillings 800,000 and the other team received 450,000. These moneys are going to be used by the teams respectively to buy uniforms, train, and assist in providing the youth of the two villages with constructive activities.

Baraza guests consistently send gifts, donations and helpful material to the charity which is a wonderful indicator of the success of the program and the importance of bringing them to visit and experience village life.

Baraza Resort and Spa - Opinions and Reviews

Unlike many operators we not only visit all the hotels we offer regularly but we also stay in them. Please find a few hints, tips and opinions from our team below:

I’ve been lucky enough to stay at Baraza three times now, and if you can believe it’s possible, it has genuinely been better and better each time! The last time I stayed there was with my partner for her birthday and we couldn’t have been more spoiled. On arrival an ice cold bottle of sparkling wine was waiting for us in our palatial villa, so we popped the cork and got straight in our large private plunge pool and didn’t leave for the next 2 hours! We also experienced the most wonderful spa treatments, and it’s no exaggeration to say that the spa at Baraza is really one of the very best in the whole of East Africa.

Baraza always delivers for all guests. Whether it’s family groups, honeymoon couples, groups of friends or single travellers, Baraza offers something for everyone. We send many thousands of people to Baraza each year and feedback is almost exclusively and overwhelmingly positive. They have really got the formula for a luxury hotel down perfectly: the food is amazing and constantly changing from day to day, so there’s never any lack of choice or repetition. It’s like being able to eat out in a 5* gourmet restaurant for every meal every day! They have also got fantastic staff and some of the best and most consistent service on the island. All staff seem so happy in their jobs and this really shines through in the experience of every single guest. The same can unfortunately not be said for every hotel in Zanzibar!

The other main thing Baraza has going for it is the location, definitely one of the best beaches on the island, and unlike many other places in Zanzibar, you’re not perched up on a coral cliff, you’re actually on beach level, so staying at Baraza feels much more like the tropical beach holiday you’ve always dreamed of, and you feel much more connected to the beach. You also manage to avoid the more crowded beaches of the North and the North East coast: Nungwi and Kendwa in the North, and the stretch from Pwani Mchangani to Kiwengwa in the North East both contains lots of large and small hotels, therefore lots more tourists on the beaches, and also lots more locals selling tours, arts and crafts etc. At Baraza you get none of this, just miles and miles of empty white sand beach fringed with palm trees: the perfect place to really unwind and relax and let your guard down fully.

One real highlight for us during our holiday at Baraza was the pre dinner cocktails at one of the bars: on one evening a couple of members of staff set up with a Moroccan drum and guitar and strummed some soft beautiful music under the stars as we sat in the soft orange glow of the unique brass lanterns. The next night they set up a telescope in the same spot and let us look at the moon up close! It’s these little touches that make a stay at Baraza so special and keep people returning there year after year.

In summary, if your budget allows, then Baraza is definitely my top recommendation on the island! Simply the best of the best, and for me just that little bit better than the nearest rivals: The Residence, The Hideaway, Dream of Zanzibar and the like.
