We would recommend a stay of up to a week. Our average client books for 6 nights with a further two nights in Stone Town. We would recommend Zanzibar Palace or similar as the perfect partner to Sunshine Hotel.

Sunshine Hotel - The Details

Sunshine’s design concept is to bring both the beach into the lodge and the gardens to the beach. Detailed research into the flora best suited to the climate and soils of Matemwe gave the owner and architect the initial inspiration and focal point from which to design the public areas and guest rooms. The result is a chic and contemporary lodge that evokes a sense of calm and relaxation from the moment you step in amongst the Makuti thatches, canopies and stone walls.

This is as unobtrusive a design for a beach dwelling as they come. With constant maintenance and care the gardens thrive and the whole team at Sunshine beam with smiles. The chef sings happily in the kitchen, preparing fantastic plates of Zanzibari and international cuisine. They tried no less than 5 varieties of potatoes in their quest to produce the perfect chip!

Room Descriptions & Facilities

There are 12 Sunshine Suites, a Blue Breeze Suite, Honeymoon Suite and a garden retreat apartment. In every suite there is a comfortable double bed or twin beds with a large mosquito net, private bathroom with shower and toilet, ceiling fan, strong standing fan, small bedside fan, safe deposit box, stone bench covered with cushions, wooden wardrobe, cool ambient lights and a spacious balcony or veranda (except the garden suites). There are no family or interconnecting rooms but a single bed can be added to any of the rooms.

Sunshine Suites

Located in three large two story bungalows named Clove, Cinnamon and Coconut, the Sunshine Suites are surrounded by tropical gardens and positioned behind the swimming pool, which is set back from the beach. Most rooms offer ocean views with balconies on the first floor and verandas for the ground floor rooms. Those without direct ocean views have verandas and tropical garden views.

Blue Breeze Suite

In a separate building, the Blue Breeze suite sits above the honeymoon suite with an extensive balcony offering stunning uninterrupted sea views and furniture crafted from 300 year old wood.

Honeymoon Suite

The Honeymoon Suite is for sure the most luxurious room. Located on the ground floor below the Blue Breeze Suite, it has a private garden with a beach banda and plunge pool on the veranda.

Garden Retreat Apartment

Set alone to the back of the lodge, the beach apartment has a living room and bathroom downstairs and a bedroom upstairs.

‘ECOndition’

There is no air conditioning at Sunshine. The hotel is eco-friendly and was specially designed to use the ocean breeze to cool down the rooms, just as the sultan palaces did in the old times.

Internet

There is wireless internet for all guests. It does not cover the whole hotel and the best reception is in the restaurant. Please note that, as with all of Zanzibar, it is not very fast and not very reliable.

Restaurant & Bar

There is a restaurant serving a wide variety of delicious food and a bar serving wide variety of delicious drinks. A cool and comfortable lounge area is situated on a mezzanine to the restaurant where you can relax and chill (and use the internet). The menu is changed every day, plus there are daily specials.

Payments

Sunshine accepts cash (USD, EUR, GBP and Tanzanian Schilings) or credit cards (VISA and Mastercard). Please note that for card payments there is 5% extra charge.

Community & Conservation

Sunshine’s design process from the conception through to the finishing touches has been intricately linked with the people and natural habitat of the site at Matemwe. The kitchens are stocked with locally grown produce and the local fishing communities benefit greatly from their relationship with the hotel.
