Shooting Star Lodge Zanzibar

The lodge has grown organically from a beach bar with a few guest Bandas to a stylish boutique.

Shooting Star Lodge at Kiwenga is one of the only small privately owned and run lodges on this stretch of the north east coast. The privileged position on the northern tip of a long powder white sand cove gives guests a feeling of seclusion and exclusivity as the lodge stands alone on the beach. Owned by Elly, a Tanzanian from Moshi who opened Shooting Star 17 years ago, the lodge has grown organically from a simple beach bar with a few guest Bandas to a stylish boutique with Villas and private pools alongside traditional guest rooms.

Highlights

  • The Suites are fantastic, designed to feel like your own mini castle, with private pool and they are currently on a super special offer!
  • Excellent for young families, particularly the cottage rooms and suites with space for four.

Right for you?

  • Shooting Star is slightly raised on a coral bank, which means there are a few steps to get down onto the beach unless you stay in a suite, which has its own pathway.

? What is the beach like and how busy is it?
The beach on the east coast is absolutely stunning and the stretch outside Shooting Star is postcard perfect. Directly outside the lodge the beach is fairly quiet however it does get busier within ten minutes’ walk in either direction due to some larger neighbours.

$$$Prices for Shooting Star start at: $105 per person per night, including breakfast and dinner each day, during Low Season.
Depending when you travel, room categories and party size prices rise to $288 per person per night during Peak Season.

Room Descriptions & Facilities

The 11 Sea View Cottages are light, spacious and airy with en-suite bathrooms, high beamed ceilings, large windows, ceiling fans and air-conditioning. All have traditionally carved Zanzibari four-poster beds with mosquito net canopies, beautiful batik bed covers, coconut wood wall mirrors and hand-made teak wood furniture.

Some Sea View Cottages have two levels and are ideal for families with young children, whilst all have spacious private verandas and sitting areas with stunning ocean views.

The 3 garden lodge rooms also have four-poster Zanzibari beds draped with attractive mosquito nets. Smaller than cottages, the rooms have ample space for an extra bed to accommodate families or groups of friends. They are fully air-conditioned with ceiling fans and en-suite bathrooms. The secluded terraces have soft cushioned sofas looking out over the gardens and pool area beyond.

The Monsoon Villas are named Kusi and Kaskazi after the southern and northern monsoon winds. Each has three floors with two bedrooms and a large private swimming pool set in lush tropical gardens. The roof top terrace has an open air bath tub and four-poster daybed perfect for star gazing or siestas in the heat of the afternoon. Once again, the villa rooms are furnished in traditional hand crafted pieces and batik bed linen with air-conditioning throughout.

Resort Service & Facilities

There is a bar, restaurant, lounge and Infinity pool for you to enjoy. The restaurant menu changes daily and all dietary requirements are catered for.

There are also beachfront shades and sun loungers for guests to relax in addition to their own private verandas. The team at Shooting star can arrange the following activities: scuba diving, snorkelling, parasailing, kite surfing, micro lighting, rock pooling, sunset dhow cruise, reef trips by Ngalawa, Stone Town trips and spice trails.

Community & Conservation

Shooting Star has grown and developed from fish restaurant to beach huts and through to luxury boutique. The local community - including farmers, fishermen and craftsmen and women - have all benefitted from this growth and continue to supply the hotel and receive support from Elly and his team.

Shooting Star Lodge - Opinions and Reviews

Unlike many operators we not only visit all the hotels we offer regularly but we also stay in them. Please find a few hints, tips and opinions from our staff plus some genuine feedback from our clients below.

Along with Unguja Lodge in the South, I think Shooting Star is one of the best examples of a traditional Zanzibari resort on the island. It is locally owned with local staff, it is small, low rise and just a charming place to spend time. The gardens are wonderful, and the beach is huge. If you want to escape the stress of Western life completely, and step off the grid for a week, this resort is perfect.

I have stayed in a Monsoon villa, they are so unique and offer some of the best views on the island from the roof terrace. These also come with a pool that I believe to be the most private on the island, you cannot be see in your pool from anywhere besides your own roof terrace. I am often asked for complete pool privacy, and always recommend this room.
