Zanzibar Hotels

The island of Unguja (Zanzibar) plays host to hundreds of resorts, lodges, B&B’s, guest houses & boutique hotels. Over the last decade we have visited the vast majority of these properties to bring you a concise and current collection of the best the Island has to offer.

There are large all-singing, all-dancing resorts, intimate lodges, inspirational & artistic boutiques, traditional Zanzibari Villas, Arabian inspired architecture & indeed restored Arabian palaces nestled deep in the heart of Stone Town.

In having such a comprehensive overview of the islands accommodation, we can objectively compare and contrast properties against one another in terms of their price band, comparable value, location, ability to deliver what they promise and their connection with the island’s community.

It is important to us that the spirit of sustainable, ecological & social tourism plays in integral role in the development of new and exciting properties, just as the well-established and most loved jewels of the island already do.

Please enjoy our collection and do not hesitate to call us for assistance in planning and booking your Zanzibari holiday. No international operator knows and loves the island as we do.

Baraza Zanzibar
Ultimate luxury on one of the world's best beaches!

Baraza is up there in the top end of luxury on Zanzibar and indeed the world over. The unique architectural style is born of the vision of a bygone era of Omani Sultans and Sultanas lazing in a heady flow of luxury silks. Ornately adorned passages giving way to archways opening into cavernous halls with sumptuous day beds where the eye is drawn on to the distant ocean framed by the intricate archways. Matemwe Beach Village - The Details

Three vast thatched open-sided structures accommodate the bar, lounge and dining area. The rooms are scattered along the tree line with the standard rooms taking the front row as these were originally the main accommodation. Suites were a later addition and are built over two stories with an upstairs veranda and lounging chairs offering ocean views.

The honeymooners' Asali Suite has been featured in international press countless times as one of the most romantic places in Zanzibar. Built away from the rest of the lodge, it has butler service and a private chef to cater for your every need. There is a plunge pool, sunbathing deck, indoor and outdoor lounges and a feeling that you are the only people on the entire island – magic.

Room Descriptions & Facilities

At Matemwe Beach Lodge, the 18 Standard Rooms are set back a little from the beach for privacy. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with hot water and fans.

The 5 Suites are primarily designed for couples with a large bed in the main room and then a single baraza bed suitable for a child underneath the stairs. All the suites are colourfully decorated and have an upstairs veranda with lounging chairs.

The Asali Suite is designed with honeymooners in mind. It has one double bed and is separate from the rest of the lodge. It houses its own plunge pool and comes complete with your own dedicated chef and butler to cater for your every need.

Resort Service & Facilities

The cosy lounge has low tables surrounded by masses of African print cushions. If you can draw away your line of sight from the spectacular ocean beyond, there are games and books that will keep you entertained.

The bar and restaurant feed, water and nourish you with local dishes and African wines. The menus are not extensive but the quality is good and nothing is too much trouble for the staff.

Community & Conservation

Matemwe Beach Village has a very real commitment to Zanzibar and its people. The owners and management believe they have a duty towards the people of the village and have implemented the following strategies: Gainful employment - wherever possible employing people from the neighbouring villages - staff are promoted from within wherever possible; fresh produce such as fish, some fruit and veg are sourced locally; and seafood is selected carefully so as not to deplete the reef or ocean and they do not hinder the local aqua-culture communities.

When it comes to the design and soft furnishings, everything is locally sourced: Funky light fittings are made by local craftsman from wood, iron and papier-mâché; fittings (such as hooks, curtain and towel rails) are made by Zanzibari ironmongers; bed covers and cotton sarongs are hand-woven by Fundi Kiwale and his team on their huge hand looms; the beach baskets and hats are woven by a woman’s co-operative called Moto that gives work to hundreds of women; mats woven from coco rope are skilfully made by Pandu who has been blind since he was a child; the furniture is made either on Zanzibar or the mainland; the soap, shampoo, massage oils and everything you use and see during your stay is the product of local craftsmen and women.

Matemwe Beach Village - Opinions and Reviews

Unlike many operators we not only visit all the hotels we offer regularly but we also stay in them. Please find a few hints, tips and opinions from our team below:

Matemwe Beach Village is perfectly located on the white powdery sands of Matemwe and is very popular with divers and younger travellers and is the best small hotel in this price range. It’s friendly and laid back and perfectly located for experiencing the Mnemba Atol. For those who may have a little more money to spend, the excellent Sunshine Hotel is just along the beach and you can still book diving and snorkelling activities at this hotel.

Matemwe Beach Village is one of the most established lodges on Zanzibar Island. It continues to receive great reviews from guests year after year and you can see why. The hotel has a great layout and benefits from a privileged location on a fabulous long stretch of powder white sand beach opposite the Mnemba Island Atoll. There are lots of little nooks where you can find a hammock to sit and laze in. Free Tea and Coffee is served on the beach twice daily, and there is a happy hour at the pool bar late afternoon which gives guests the chance to meet and discuss the day's adventures. Dinner is served in different locations around the lodge in the evenings to add variety. There rooms are quite simple with thatched mikuti roofs and there is a gift shop filled with tasteful trinkets to buy as souvenirs. Matemwe is a perfect location for diving and the One Ocean dive centre on site is fully equipped and one of the most reputable on the island. It is the charming attention to little details that set this hotel apart from the others. It is without doubt one of my favourite lodges in Tanzania.
